According to the “Summary of Economic and Financial Data” for July 2025, released by the Bank of Ghana, Mobile Money keeps showing growth in the country.
All indicators, including transaction and volume data for July 2025, show that Mobile Money usage is still high in the country and does not look to be slowing down anytime soon.
Continued Growth of Mobile Money Accounts
As of June 2025, registered mobile money accounts reached 76.4 million, up from 69.3 million a year earlier.
Active accounts—those used at least once in the prior 90 days—grew to 24.5 million, reflecting a steady rise in engagement.
The volume of transactions soared to 783 million in June 2025, a significant leap from 644 million in June 2024.
The value of these transactions hit 323.2 billion Ghanaian cedis (GHC) in June 2025, compared to 224 billion GHC a year prior.
Mobile money interoperability
Mobile money interoperability, which allows transactions across different networks, recorded 23.3 million transactions worth 3.9 billion GHC in June 2025, up from 16.9 million transactions worth 2.7 billion GHC a year earlier.
However, the number of active mobile money agents—those facilitating cash-in and cash-out services—dropped from 551,000 in June 2024 to 423,000 in June 2025.
This decline suggests a possible shift toward fully digital transactions, as users increasingly bypass agents to conduct business directly through their phones.
Cheques and ACH Transactions Are Still Alive
Traditional payment methods, like cheques and automated clearing house (ACH) transactions, also remain relevant but pale in comparison to mobile money’s dominance.
Cheque transactions, for instance, totaled 414,000 in June 2025, with a value of 32.9 billion GHC—significant but dwarfed by mobile money’s volume.
ACH direct debit and credit transactions, while growing, also lag behind, with values of 395.1 million GHC and 9.1 billion GHC, respectively, in the same period.
