For patients suffering from hair loss, a quick and easy solution to regain hair growth was usually a trip to Turkey for a hair transplant procedure.

Most of these procedures have produced positive results for those suffering from loss of hair follicles.

Now, it looks like you could add another country to the list to visit to have this procedure performed. That country is none other than Ghana.

By the end of 2025, the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), a state-of-the-art health facility in Accra, will begin offering hair transplant surgery to its list of medical services.

We have successfully piloted the procedure here,” said Dr. Baffoe Gyan, UGMC’s Director of Medical Affairs. “The trial was done on one of our own doctors. His hair is very fine now. We’re confident in the results.”

Growing Popularity of Hair Transplants

Hair transplants — a surgical technique where follicles are moved from one part of the body to a bald or thinning area — are most commonly used to treat androgenetic alopecia, a hereditary form of hair loss that affects millions globally.

Istanbul, Turkey

The procedure has grown in popularity, with Turkey becoming a popular destination, attracting thousands of medical tourists each year.

In 2021 alone, 1.05 million hair procedures were performed in the country, generating $1.8 billion in revenue for its economy.

If well-advertised and patronised, UGMC could help position Ghana as a viable alternative for West Africans and beyond.

We are finalizing preparations to make the service available to the wider public,” Dr. Gyan told Graphic Online in an interview. “Before we scale, we must ensure we have enough trained surgeons to meet demand.

The lead surgeon for the hair transplant program received specialized training in New York before returning to Accra. A team of young medical staff is now being trained to offer the service at scale.

Rise In Hair Transplant Surgeries

According to reports, over 700,000 hair transplant procedures were performed in 2021, with numbers climbing steadily since.

The market is projected to grow from $9 billion in 2024 to $10.5 billion by 2025.

Turkey’s rise as a destination for hair transplants has been driven by a combination of affordable pricing, skilled surgeons, and aggressive marketing.

Clinics in Istanbul and other major cities often bundle procedures with hotel stays and airport transfers, making the process accessible and attractive to international patients.
