Politicians Accused of Liberia parliament arson Bailed for $440,000

What’s Happening: Liberia’s former House Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa and three other representatives—Abu Kamara, Dixon Seboe, and Jacob Debee—were released from prison after paying a combined bond of $440,000.

They face charges including arson, criminal mischief, and attempted murder related to the December 2024 fire that destroyed the Capitol building in Monrovia, causing $8.6 million in damage.

The incident is tied to a broader power struggle in Liberia’s House, marked by a failed impeachment attempt against Koffa in October 2024 and his eventual resignation last month.

Severe Cold Front Brings Snow to South Africa, Causing Fatal Accidents

What’s Happening: A severe cold front hit South Africa, bringing heavy snowfall, road closures, power outages, and a fatal accident.

Five people died in a crash on the N2 highway in the Eastern Cape due to the harsh weather.

The South African Weather Service had warned of a significant temperature drop, disruptive rain, damaging winds, and snow in eastern regions.

Snowfall, common in South Africa’s winter months (June–August), affected the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Free State, leading to closures on the N2 highway.

Eskom reported widespread power outages due to the weather and is deploying additional resources to address them. The cold front is expected to continue through midweek.
